Born into a dialect speaking family and growing up in a Malay village, BK Tan spoke only dialect for the first 6 years of his life. The next 6 years, he studied English in a village school but did not speak much of the language. At the age of 13, in secondary school, he realised for the first time that he was severely disadvantaged. By chance, he came across and bought a book entitled Lee Kuan Yew - The Critical Years written by Alex Josey. For the next 6 years, he studied the book and practised the speeches in the book unceasingly. At the end of the 6 years, he was admitted to the Law Faculty of NUS and eventually became a lawyer.
During pupillage, BK learned the art of lawyering from the venerated Mr Winston Chen. He went on to become a prosecutor at the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Commercial Affairs Department where he argued many cases in court and won all his cases. After that, BK joined the financial world and held senior management positions in various financial institutions and handled numerous transactions and matters. BK is a trainer at heart and has provided training and coaching throughout his distinguished career.
